The Pharisee within Me
by Wayne R. Hobbes
Wayne Hobbes studied for the ministry at Baptist Bible College (of
Pennsylvania; BRE degree, 1980). He also studied at Baptist Bible Seminary,
and later completed a master's degree at Luther Rice Seminary in 1994. He was
ordained to the ministry in 1985 at his home church in Tunkhannock,
Pennsylvania. Wayne served as a pastor for twenty years, serving on four
church staff positions from youth pastor to solo and senior pastorates.

Throughout these years of ministry, Wayne's primary passion has been in
teaching, communicating the Bible in clear and practical terms for anyone to
understand. He believes passionately that even the most complex teachings of
the Bible can be explained in every-day terms and connected to any person's
life.

Wayne's own experiences with finding pharisaic tendencies among Christians
and churches began in his own teen years, and continued throughout his twenty
years of formal church ministry (and since). As a baby boomer, he grew up in an
environment of peers who were questioning established values and searching
for meaningful answers. For Wayne, this quest took on a rich biblical depth as
he began diligently comparing established Christian traditions against scripture
and sorting out between the two. He was amazed to discover that much of what
bothers most spiritual outsiders about the church actually revolves around the
errors of the Pharisees.

Wayne has been writing and speaking for most of his life. His more recently
published articles include:

· "When Hospice Can Help," Western Pennsylvania's Guide to Good Health, Fall
2007: 26 (archived at http://www.guidetogoodhealth.com).

· "Our Family's Experience with Hospice," Western Pennsylvania Hospital News,
Nov. 2007:17 (archived at www.hospitalnews.org).

· "A Spiritual Journey through the Dying Process," Western Pennsylvania's Guide
to Good Health, Winter 2008: 33 (archived at

· "A Greater Goal: One Man's Pilgrimage from Loving Doctrine to Loving God,"
Discipleship Journal, 163 (Jan./Feb. 2008): 60-61.

Wayne serves as a pulpit supply speaker and is available for special speaking
engagements (click on the "contact" button at the top of this page). He also
teaches in-service training sessions for hospice.

In today's ministry climate, with the paradigm shift from traditional to
contemporary and from modernism to postmodernism, Wayne enjoys engaging
and dialoguing with people from all parts of the ideological spectrum. He is
fascinated with people, and loves to hear their stories and interact with their
ideas.

Wayne is a full-time chaplain with Gateway Hospice, an agency serving the
greater Pittsburgh region. He enjoys sailing, canoeing, hunting, golf, and any
other activity he can do with his family. He and his wife, Lori, have been married
for twenty-nine years and have five children. They live near Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania.

But keep on becoming doers of the
Word, and not hearers only,
misleading yourselves--because, if
anyone is a hearer of the Word and
not a doer, he is like a man who
notices his face in a mirror and, after
noticing himself and going away,
immediately forgets what he looks
like. But whoever looks closely at the
perfect law of freedom and continues
in it, becoming not a forgetful hearer
but one who applies it, this one will
find happiness in doing so.
(James 1:22-25; author's translation)
